AI & SEO Trends Update – 30th October 2026
Since our last AI and SEO trends update:
- Google has announced Gemini 4 Carbon, its latest frontier AI model.
- New research has questioned whether LLMs.txt files currently improve AI visibility.
- AI Overviews are appearing across more branded searches in the US.
- A controlled experiment has provided useful lessons about building AI visibility for a new brand.
- UK data reinforces why AI visibility should be measured by platform, market and source.
Here is what businesses need to know.
Recap: What We Covered Last Time
Our previous update confirmed that Google’s September spam update had finished after almost two weeks. We also covered visual-search reporting in Search Console and Google’s changes to make external links more prominent within AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Google’s Search Status Dashboard still lists the September spam update as its most recent confirmed ranking update. There have been no new confirmed core or spam updates since then.
Businesses affected by the September rollout should continue assessing performance at page and query level. The end of an update does not guarantee an immediate recovery or mean every subsequent ranking change is connected to it.
Google Announces Gemini 4 Carbon
On 28th October, Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon, describing it as its strongest model to date.
Carbon has been designed for complex, long-running tasks, with particular improvements across coding, cybersecurity, scientific work and agentic workflows. Google says the model can continue working through multi-step engineering problems over several days.
Google DeepMind CEO and co-founder Demis Hassabis described the development as “iterating at lightning speed”, highlighting Carbon’s benchmark performance alongside Google’s safety and security research.
However, Carbon is not yet broadly available. Google is initially providing access to selected cybersecurity defenders through its Fairwind Programme before gradually expanding availability to trusted partners, developers, businesses and consumers.
What This Means For You
Gemini 4 Carbon is an important AI development, but it is not a confirmed Google Search ranking update. Google has not said that Carbon is being used within AI Overviews, AI Mode or its organic ranking systems.
Businesses therefore do not need to make immediate SEO changes in response to the announcement.
The broader direction is still relevant. AI models are becoming better at completing longer tasks, reviewing multiple sources and producing more complex outputs. Over time, this could make AI-led research and customer journeys more detailed and interactive.
Continue making important business information clear, accurate and easy to verify. Service details, methodologies, evidence, pricing factors, limitations and technical documentation should be understandable without an AI system having to fill in the gaps.
LLMs.txt Shows No Measurable AI Visibility Benefit
An SE Ranking study of almost 300,000 domains found no correlation between the presence of an LLMs.txt file and how frequently a domain was cited by AI systems.
LLMs.txt is a proposed file that points AI systems towards selected website content. It is sometimes described as an “AI sitemap”, although it is not an established access-control standard like robots.txt.
SE Ranking found that:
- 10.13% of the websites studied had implemented LLMs.txt.
- Adoption was similar across low and high-traffic websites.
- The presence of the file did not predict how frequently a domain received AI citations.
- Removing LLMs.txt from SE Ranking’s predictive model improved its accuracy.
The results reflect the dataset and methodology used, so they do not prove that LLMs.txt will never become useful. They do show that there is currently little evidence of a measurable visibility benefit.
What This Means For You
LLMs.txt can remain a low-priority experiment, but businesses should not treat it as a shortcut to AI citations.
Prioritise the fundamentals that search engines and AI systems are already known to use:
- Make important content crawlable and indexable.
- Maintain accurate XML sitemaps and robots.txt rules.
- Use clear page titles, headings and internal links.
- Publish original evidence and useful subject expertise.
- Keep product, service and company information current.
- Build relevant mentions and authority beyond your own website.
If you have limited technical or content resources, these areas are more likely to produce value than implementing LLMs.txt alone.
AI Overviews Appear Across Brand Searches
Another SE Ranking study examined 1,000 brand keywords in the US and 1,000 in Germany. Each keyword was checked three times on desktop during October.
AI Overviews appeared for an average of 82.5% of the US brand searches tested. The figure was much lower in Germany at 40.4%, showing how significantly results can vary between markets.
The research also found that Google looked beyond company homepages when sourcing information about brands:
- Homepages represented 36.8% of brand-website citations.
- Product, service and category pages represented 22.9%.
- About and company information pages represented 11.7%.
- 62.2% of the cited brand pages did not appear in the organic top 10 for the same search.
- 61% of citations came from platforms the brand managed or could participate in, including websites, Google Business Profiles, YouTube and review platforms.
These figures describe the US and German desktop samples, not UK search behaviour. They should be treated as directional rather than applied universally.
What This Means For You
Ranking first for your company name may no longer give you complete control over the first impression customers receive.
Search for your brand, products and key people and review:
- Whether an AI Overview appears.
- How it describes the business.
- Which pages and external sources it cites.
- Whether the information is accurate and current.
- Whether outdated names, services or claims appear.
Do not limit this review to the homepage. Service pages, About pages, location pages, support content, Google Business Profiles, videos and review listings can all help shape how Google describes a brand.
New Brands Need More Than Branded AI Visibility
SE Ranking also ran a controlled experiment to understand how a completely new brand could build visibility within AI answers.
It created a new brand called Civoryx and published 93 pages across the brand website and 11 external websites owned by the researchers. The same 165 prompts were then monitored across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Between April and September:
- Civoryx appeared in 84.8% of answers to branded questions.
- It appeared in only 1.8% of answers to non-branded questions.
- 85.5% of non-branded answers mentioning Civoryx cited at least one external article.
- Short external articles took a median of 21 days to receive their first citation, while longer guides took 126.5 days.
The experiment also demonstrated why citations should not be confused with commercial results. Despite a 149% increase in monthly citations between April and August, Civoryx recorded 100 website users, 11 Google Search clicks and one identified visit from an AI assistant during the measurement period.
What This Means For You
The lesson is not to reproduce the experiment by publishing across a network of owned websites. It is that a brand’s own content may explain the business well without making it a recommended option for broader, non-branded questions.
Businesses should:
- Track branded and non-branded AI prompts separately.
- Create clear core pages explaining what the business offers, who it helps and how it works.
- Identify the sources AI platforms already cite for relevant buyer questions.
- Pursue credible reviews, comparisons, industry coverage and directory listings.
- Give useful content time to gain visibility before judging it.
- Measure traffic, enquiries and conversions alongside mentions and citations.
Branded prompts show whether AI understands your business. Non-branded prompts show whether it recommends you to people who may not know your name yet.
UK AI Visibility Differs by Platform
The latest Semrush AI Visibility Index provides further evidence that AI visibility cannot be reduced to one overall score.
Across the study, AI platforms agreed less frequently in the UK than in the US about which brands to mention and which sources to cite.
News publishers were particularly influential in UK answers. They represented an average of 29.5% of citations among ChatGPT’s 100 most-cited UK domains, compared with 19.6% in the US.
The overlap between the UK’s 100 most-mentioned brands and 100 most-cited domains ranged from only 36.7% to 45.3%. A business can therefore be frequently mentioned without its own website being a leading source.
What This Means For You
Measure ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews separately. Strong visibility on one platform does not guarantee the same result elsewhere.
UK businesses should also consider the role of relevant publishers, industry websites, communities, reviews and other independent sources. AI visibility depends on both what a business says about itself and what credible external sources say about it.
Conclusion
The latest developments reinforce that AI visibility is not created by one file, one ranking or one platform.
Gemini 4 Carbon shows how quickly model capabilities are advancing, but it does not require an immediate SEO response. More practical lessons come from the latest visibility studies.
LLMs.txt has not yet demonstrated a measurable citation benefit. Brand searches increasingly need to be reviewed as AI results rather than traditional rankings alone. New brands need credible information both on and beyond their own websites, while mentions, citations, traffic and conversions should be measured separately.
For UK businesses, the source landscape also differs from the US. Search and AI strategies should reflect the market, platform, category and buyer questions that actually matter to the business.
